In this course, students acquire a greater understanding of the fundamentals of year-round mountaineering in Iceland. The objective is to enable them to practise mountaineering and outdoor activities safely and on their own. The course covers travelling conduct, tourist and outdoor clothing, diet, meteorology, route selection and finding directions, with an emphasis on safe travelling and good preparation. Main dangers will also be addressed, and students taught the basics of reading the land, as well as environmental knowledge.
A large part of the course takes place outdoors, where a teacher leads students through training for the abovementioned objective, as well as them taking short and long trips with a teacher and assistants. A few day trips in the greater Önundarfjörður area are planned, as well as one camping trip.
Skills at the end of the course:
At the end of the course, students should have a deeper insight into short hikes, be able to select equipment and have general knowledge of the basics of a year-round outdoor lifestyle. They should be able to prepare and practise tourism on their own. Following this course, the student should know how to use a compass and maps to find directions, and work with GPS equipment.
