In this course, students get a glimpse of the varied economy of the Westfjords.
The focus is on sustainability, but the course touches on environmental issues, economy and social issues regarding for example health, well-being and finances. They gain an understanding of how nature can limit manʼs activities and living in the north can be complicated and restricting.
Students learn about agriculture, fishing, fish farming, tourism, hi-technology and innovation. They visit a farm and learn about farm life, visit companies in the area and learn about their products and activities. They learn about marine companies, go out on a fishing boat and learn about fish farming. Tourism in the area also gets a mention, as well as energy production, forestry and more.
Environmental issues are also covered, along with Westfjord infrastructure regarding transportation and energy, as well as all sorts of services to the inhabitants, including health care and refuse system.
In this course, students visit towns and villages to learn about different focus and challenges in each one. They will strive to meet with the councillors and hear about their background and vision for the future.
In the second half of the course, the students create an analysis of local opportunities and present their results.
Skills at the end of the course:
Students know the main economy in the area, services and infrastructure, as well as the areaʼs biggest challenges, with a focus on sustainability.
