Tourism and Rock Climbing

Course objective
The objective of this course is to introduce the basics of mountaineering as well as becoming acquainted with rock climbing.
Course description

The focus is on safe tourism with an emphasis on proper preparation, the main clothing and equipment needed, the care and maintenance of equipment, preparing journeys, packing and other key points. Students learn to use GPS equipment, compass and maps.

Students learn the basics of rock climbing, including how to behave in the mountains and especially how to use lines and other necessary safety equipment.

A large part of the course takes place outdoors, where a teacher leads students through training for the abovementioned objective, as well as them taking short and long trips with a teacher and assistants. A few day trips in the greater Önundarfjörður area are planned, as well as one camping trip.

Skills at the end of course:
At the end of this course, students should have experienced short hiking trips, be able to select equipment and have general knowledge of the basics of an outdoors lifestyle. They should be able to prepare and practice tourism on their own.
