That the students gain knowledge of winter tourism and study the basics of ice climbing.
Course description
The course builds on the foundation laid in Mountaineering 1, which is taught in the autumn semester. It focuses on preparing students for mountaineering in difficult conditions in the Icelandic winter. Students learn to travel in the mountains in winter, particularly regarding the use of ice axes, crampons and other winter safety equipment. They will learn about avalanches, how to assess the danger of avalanches, first aid, and how to rescue people from avalanches.
A large part of the course is taught outdoors, where the teacher guides students through exercises with the abovementioned objectives. Great emphasis is on short and long hikes and that students spend a lot of time outdoors, be it mountain skiing, snowshoeing or hiking in the snow. They will undertake trips of various lengths with teachers and assistants.
Skills at the end of the course:
At the end of the course, students will have gained winter hiking experience and be able to prepare and practise tourism on their own, all-year-round. They should have a basic understanding of the risk of avalanches and how to rescue people from avalanches.
